Stryker Corp. has debuted its advanced fixation technology for total hip replacements. Although the company was not the first to develop this technology, the debut of the 3-D Tritanium Primary Acetabular System marks the first time that such technology is widely available, Stryker says.

Patients that might benefit the most are those who require enhanced fixation, such as those with low bone density or osteoporosis.

Tritanium technology is designed to resemble trabecular bone, a spongy bone tissue that offers skeletal support. The current standard of care for patients requiring primary total hip replacement is 2-D technology, which enables bone to grow onto the component's surface. Stryker's 3-D Tritanium enables bone to grow into the component. It features a commercially pure titanium matrix, which has been shown to improve bone ingrowth when compared with alloys.
