Mission Critical

For better and worse, industry has long thought of FDA as an agency that is slow to change—and sometimes even resistant to change. But during his first 10 months in office, Commissioner McClellan has significantly increased the agency's speed at initiating new policies and procedures to address areas of concern. Such a hectic pace might have been expected from the commissioner's track record, as suggested in the following highlights of his career before arriving at FDA.

1985:          BA (English and biology) summa cum laude, University of Texas, Austin.

1991:          MA, MPA (regulatory policy), Harvard University.

1991–1995:  Research associate, Department of Health Care Policy, Harvard Medical School.
